It's possible to trade profitably on the Forex, the nearly $2 trillion worldwide currency exchange market. But the odds are against you, even more so if you don't prepare and plan your trades. According to a 2014 Bloomberg report, several analyses of retail Forex trading, including one by the National Futures Association (NFA), the industry's regulatory body, concluded that more than two out of three Forex traders lose money. This suggests that self-education and caution are recommended. Here are some approaches that may improve your odds of taking a profit. Prepare Before You Begin Trading Because the Forex market is highly leveraged -- as much as 50 to 1 -- it can have the same appeal as buying a lottery ticket: some small chance of making a killing. This, however, isn't trading; it's gambling, with the odds long against you. A better way of entering the Forex market is to carefully prepare. Beginning with a practice account is helpful and risk-free. While you're trading in your practice account, read the most frequently recommended Forex trading books, among them Currency Forecasting: A Guide to Fundamental and Technical Models of Exchange Rate Determination, by Michael R. Rosenberg is short, not too sweet and highly admired introduction to the Forex market. Forex Strategies: Best Forex Strategies for High Profits and Reduced Risk, by Matthew Maybury is an excellent introduction to Forex trading. The Little Book of Currency Trading: How to Make Big Profits in the World of Forex, by Kathy Lien is another concise introduction that has stood the test of time. All three are available on Amazon. Rosenberg's book, unfortunately, is pricey, but it's widely available in public libraries. "Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude," by Mark Douglas is another good book that's available on Amazon, and, again, somewhat pricey, although the Kindle edition is not. Use the information gained from your reading to plan your trades before plunging in. The more you change your plan, the more you end up in trouble and the less likely that elusive forex profit will end up in your pocket. Diversify and Limit Your Risks Two strategies that belong in every trader's arsenal are: Diversification: Traders who execute many small traders, particularly in different markets where the correlation between markets is low, have a better chance of making a profit. Putting all your money in one big trade is always a bad idea. Familiarize yourself with ways guaranteeing a profit on an already profitable order, such as a trailing stop, and of limiting losses using stop and limit orders. These strategies and more are covered in the recommended books. Novice traders often make the mistake of concentrating on how to win; it's even more important to understand how to limit your losses. Be Patient Forex traders, particularly beginners, are prone to getting nervous if a trade does not go their way immediately, or if the trade goes into a little profit they get itchy to pull the plug and walk away with a small profit that could have been a significant profit with little downside risk using appropriate risk reduction strategies. In "On Any Given Sunday," Al Pacino reminds us that "football is a game of inches." That's a winning attitude in the Forex market as well. Remember that you are going to win some trades and lose others. Take satisfaction in the accumulation of a few more wins than losses. Over time, that could make you rich!

INGRéDIéNTS
FOR THé BROWNIéS
  • 4 ouncés sémiswéét chocolaté, coarsély choppéd
  • 4 ouncés unswéét chocolaté, coarsély choppéd
  • 1/2 cup unsaltéd buttér, cut into piécés
  • 3 tabléspoons unswééténéd cocoa powdér
  • 3 largé éggs, room témpératuré
  • 1 3/4 cups packéd light brown sugar
  • 1 tabléspoon vanilla éxtract
  • 1/2 téaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purposé flour

FOR THé CARAMéL LAYéR
  • 1 1/2 cups caramél bits, or 30 unwrappéd soft vanilla caraméls
  • 1 tabléspoon évaporatéd milk

FOR THé NOUGAT LAYéR
  • 2/3 cup granulatéd sugar
  • 1/3 cup évaporatéd milk
  • 3 tabléspoons unsaltéd buttér
  • 1 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 3 tabléspoons crunchy péanut buttér, or créamy péanut buttér

FOR THé CHOCOLATé LAYéR
  • 1 cup sémiswéét chocolaté chips
  • 1 tabléspoon végétablé oil

INSTRUCTIONS
MAKé THé BROWNIé LAYéR
  1. Préhéat thé ovén to 350ºF. Liné an 8x8-inch pan with aluminum foil, léaving a 1-inch ovérhang on all sidés. Spray thé foil lightly with nonstick spray.
  2. Add thé chocolaté and buttér to a médium héatproof bowl sét ovér a pot of simméring watér. Stir occasionally until fully méltéd and smooth. Whisk in thé cocoa powdér until smooth. Sét asidé to cool slightly.
  3. In a séparaté médium bowl, whisk togéthér thé éggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt until combinéd. Whisk in thé méltéd chocolaté until wéll combinéd. Fold in thé flour with a rubbér spatula just until combinéd. 
  4. Spréad thé battér événly into thé bottom of thé préparéd pan. Baké for 20 to 25 minutés, or until thé top of thé browniés look dry and thé édgés bégin to pull away from thé sidés of thé pan. Cool thé browniés in thé pan on a wiré rack.
MAKé THé CARAMéL LAYéR
  1. In a médium microwavé-safé bowl, combiné thé caraméls and évaporatéd milk. Héat on high for 2 minutés, stopping to stir évéry 30 séconds until thé caraméls havé complétély méltéd. Spréad événly ovér thé top of thé brownié layér. Placé thé pan in thé fréézér whilé you maké thé nougat layér.
MAKé THé NOUGAT LAYéR
  1. In a small saucépan, combiné thé sugar, évaporatéd milk, and buttér. Bring to a boil ovér médium-high héat, stirring constantly. Turn thé héat down to médium and continué to boil at a modératé raté without stirring for 5 minutés. If thé mixturé turns dark in color, you'vé boiléd it for too long. It should bé light in color and thé consisténcy of swééténéd condénséd milk. 
  2. Méanwhilé, in a médium héatproof bowl, combiné thé marshmallow fluff and péanut buttér. Slowly pour thé hot nougat mixturé into thé marshmallow fluff and péanut buttér. Whisk until wéll combinéd. 
  3. Spréad thé nougat layér événly ovér thé top of thé caramél layér. Placé thé pan in back into thé fréézér whilé you maké thé chocolaté layér.
MAKé THé CHOCOLATé LAYéR
  1. In a médium microwavé-safé bowl, combiné thé chocolaté chips and oil. Héat on high in incréménts of 15 séconds, stirring wéll bétwéén éach oné until thé chocolaté is méltéd and smooth. 
  2. Spréad thé chocolaté événly ovér thé top of thé nougat layér. Covér thé pan loosély with aluminum foil and réfrigératé for 2 hours. Lift thé browniés out of thé pan by thé foil ovérhang and cut thém into bars.
MAKé AHéAD TIP
  1. Browniés will kéép for up to 1 wéék storéd in an airtight containér in thé réfrigérator.
  2. Browniés will kéép for up to 3 months storéd in an airtight containér in thé fréézér. Thaw in thé réfrigérator ovérnight.
